Researching sustainably

Since I carry out research on climate change, it is very important to me that my research activities have the smallest possible CO2 footprint. A great deal of the emissions related to research projects are through work travel for field research or academic conferences. Before the pandemic and accompanying travel restrictions I had already decided to abstain from air travel for work purposes for the duration of my Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellowship.

When research activities abroad are possible again, work travel will be by train. I report on these trips on Twitter to increase awareness in the academic community.

In addition, I have signed the self-commitment from Scientists for Future that I will from now on abstain from short-haul flights under 1000km for work, when the journey can be made with alternative transport in under 12 hours.
